The History And Impact Of Cricket In Ireland

Cricket has a long history in Ireland, with many successes coming both to the men’s and women’s national teams. It was first introduced to Ireland in the early 19th century, and many of the clubs that were formed early on, are still in existance today. The country’s first national team played in 1855 against the Gentelmen of England, and the game was played in Dublin, Ireland.

The spread of the game continued until the early 1880s, when the outbreak of land wars (landlords and tenannts were alienated), and a ban being placed on playing foreign games put a halt to the popularity of the sport for some time. This ban remained until 1970, but the sport definately came back and was accepted as it had been early on.

Today both the men and women national teams have had great successes as of recently. First in 2005 the ICC trophy was hosted in Ireland, and brought a great turnout. This sparked interest in the sport once again, as the country performed well in the competition. Then, again, in 2007 World Cup, the victory by the men’s national team really brought the sport of cricket back to the country in a strong way.
