Cricket Ireland

Ireland’s cricket team hasn’t had it easy, but they’ve certainly held their own over the years, even becoming known as giant-killers in the sport. With a history dating back to 1855 (when the Irish national team first faced off against The Gentleman of England), Cricket Ireland has had many years to develop a distinctive brand of playand a loyal fan following. Before 1993, the Irish team wasn’t part of the International Cricket Council. They competed against any teams that decided to visit Ireland, and gained a reputation for surprising victories, especially against the popular West Indian cricket team in 1928 and 1969. Ireland and Scotland competed for the honor of joining the ICC first, and Ireland ultimately succeeded in 1993, with Scotland following in 1994.The Irish showed off their customary brashness by finishing 7th in the ICC Trophy tournament their first year, and continued giving good showings throughout the next decade and a half until finally winning in 2009. However, the big news occurred two years earlier, when the giant-killers made it to the World Cup, tying with Zimbabwe in their first game and defeating Pakistan in their second. Ireland was defeated in the final match by Sri Lanka. The 2008 documentary Breaking Boundaries chronicles this story, which raised the team’s international status and brought them even more popularity in their home country. The team continues to amaze, and though the season is over for the year, fans eagerly await its triumphant return.
