A full listing of cricket terms would take many pages, but we couldn’t help pointing out some of our favorite words and phrases that the game has granted us. The Ashes: Refers to both the annual games between England and Australia, and the urn which is said to contain a burned cricket ball from an 1882 game. Batsman: The name for a player on the batting team, or the general term for an especially good batter. Beamer: An illegal bowl that passes over the batman’s waistChin music: The strategy of aiming bouncers at a batsman’s throat or chin for intimidation. Come to the crease: What a batsman does when they walk onto the pitch. Dead bat: A lightly-held bat that knocks the ball to the ground when hit. Devil’s number: a score of 87an unlucky score in Australian cricket. Drinks: a break in the game when the players are brought liquid refreshments. Ferret: a really bad batsman. Fruit salad: the process of varying the bowling delivery to keep opposing players on their toes. Gazunder: A bouncer that doesn’t bounce. Kwik cricket: a quicker version of cricket that’s designed for new and younger players. Long hop: a ball that falls short of a good-length delivery, but doesn’t reach the height of a bouncera bad shot. Pie chucker: a really bad bowler. Sledging: a form of trash talk that can carry off the field to mentally break down opponents. Tail-ender: the batsmen at the end of the batting order, usually there for a reason. Yorker: a fast delivery that’s designed to bounce underneath the opposing player’s bat
